Frequently Asked Questions

What is a community garden?

Community gardens are shared green spaces where food is grown to benefit those who do not have access to healthy foods, particularly those living in food deserts. Food deserts are areas in which most members of the community do not own a car and there is not a grocery store within walking distance (Elegant Themes). In some gardens, members of the community are active in the planting, tending, and harvesting the garden. Usually, they get to take home what they choose to.

Who runs the community gardens in Kentucky?

Seedleaf, American Community Garden Association, and the UK Arboretum are the largest organizations that promote, fund, and organize community garden spaces in the Commonwealth. More information about how to get involved with these organizations can be found here.
