"There's something about harvesting food together that makes [volunteers] realize that there's something very meaningful about working in a place where they are an outsider"

Why should you get involved?

Each and every day, families go without food and the nutrition necessary for good health. Community gardens help to mitigate this need, while simultaneously promoting a positive, sustainable food culture and social relationships. By volunteering even one hour a week in a garden, you can help meet this need in your community. If you love helping people and working with them please take a moment to look into the wide variety of gardens in need of help today.

Ways to help the world

The journey does not stop at Lexington. Community gardens help reach the far ends of the world. Refugees are in need of new homes, communities, and fresh produce, and community gardens can help. San Antonio, Texas has established a program where many volunteers are helping the coming refugees by providing them with fresh food from community gardens as well as helping them aclimate to a new life ( Meyrat). Bringing international people into the urban realm diversifies the food culture by allowing new individuals to contribute their home culture to the growing melting pot culture of American food. As San Antonio embraces the international outlook of community gardens, there are plenty of opportunities to support gardens at home and making a difference across the world.
